EPD | Environmental Product Declaration

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized document that provides information about the potential environmental and human health impacts of a product.

EPDs are generated based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) calculations and provide a quantitative basis for comparing products and services. EPDs present transparent and comparable information about the environmental impacts of products from a life cycle perspective, and they are independently verified documents.

Guide and Framework

The foundation of an EPD is the TS EN ISO 14025 standard prepared by the International Organization for Standardization and the Turkish Standards Institute. In this document, EPDs are referred to as Type III environmental declarations.

Why EPD?

Material manufacturers use EPDs to showcase and communicate the sustainability information of their products. EPDs can measure how a project contributes to the circular economy, allowing you to minimize environmentally and economically measured impacts and turn them into opportunities to improve circularity.

An EPD includes information about the product and its potential environmental impacts and benefits:

Technical information: Relevant product data and information LCA information: Environmental impacts, such as Global Warming Potential, Cumulative Energy Demand, as well as a description of the LCA process (data, methods, assumptions) Other relevant environmental information (e.g., VOCs, hazardous substances, etc.) Review and verification information: Reports about the LCA consultant, EPD program operator, and external third-party EPD verifier. The resulting report is approved by a third-party verifier.

ecotora Approach

ecotora manages the EPD Certification process for your products and services.

EPD process

Determination of activities and product groups to be processed LCA study gathers data related to raw materials, energy consumption, transfer, waste generation throughout the product’s life cycle within the scope Process is conducted according to TS EN ISO 14044 Data modeled using SimaPro software and Ecoinvent database, reported based on Product Category Rules (PCR) An independent, recognized verifier reviews the LCA report and EPD according to PCR and verification protocol The verified report and documents can be publicly published by the EPD entity.
